EMDR Therapy

What is EMDR Therapy?

The definition given by EMDRIA defines this therapy the best!
You can find more information on their website:
www.emdria.org

“EMDR is a structured therapy that encourages the patient to focus briefly on the trauma memory while  simultaneously experiencing bilateral stimulation (typically eye movements), which is associated with a  reduction in the vividness and emotion associated with the trauma memories. Eye Movement  Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy  method proven to help people recover from trauma and PTSD symptoms. Ongoing research supports  positive clinical outcomes showing EMDR therapy as a helpful treatment for disorders such as anxiety,  depression, OCD, chronic pain, addictions, and other distressing life experiences (Maxfield, 2019). EMDR  therapy has even been superior to Prozac in trauma treatment (Van der Kolk et al., 2007). Shapiro and  Forrest (2016) share that more than 7 million people have been treated successfully by 110,000 therapists  in 130 countries since 2016”.

“EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. EMDR therapy, rather than focusing on changing the emotions,  thoughts, or behaviors resulting from the distressing issue, allows the brain to resume its natural healing  process”

If this is the form of treatment that will be used during your sessions, Kerrianne will discuss it at length with you and  provide more information as needed.

Psychological Pain Management

Psychological pain management counselling is the traditional method used for the treatment of pain disorders. There are many orientations to psychological counselling, however I mostly utilise Psycho-Education (Biopsychosocial Model), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy; due to considerable empirically based research which suggests its effectiveness. Psychological counselling ultimately aims to reduce distress and improve functioning of clients, which promotes subjective wellbeing and personal development.

Throughout our first few sessions we will together be evaluating your needs and providing education. By using the assessment process and goals we develop in session, I will be able to formulate with you some direction for counselling and a treatment plan.

Pain Management can involve talking about unpleasant facets and stressors of your life. This can mean that you may experience some uncomfortable feelings, including guilt, anger, sadness and frustration. On the other hand, there are also benefits for people who work through this process. It can allow people to develop solutions to specific problems, and experience a reduction in feelings of distress, and therefore pain. This shows that there are both risks and benefits to pain management counselling; there are no guarantees to what you will experience. It has been shown the more effort put in outside of sessions the more change will occur.

Psychological Counselling

Psychological counselling is offered for a broad range of complaints and issues.

Psychological counselling is the traditional method used for the treatment of mental and emotional disorders. There are many orientations to psychological counselling, however I mostly utilise Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Solution Focused Therapy due to considerable empirically based research which suggests its effectiveness. Having said this, everyone is different and it is during our first meeting that we will ascertain what approach will be of most benefit to you as an individual.
